“Classical? Jazz? or something new?”

Classical? Jazz? or Something new?

This dawn of the twenty-first century will probably be remembered in the books as a time of musical “renaissance”: never in history there has been more possibility of cross-cultural exchange, almost instantaneous wide spread of independent ideas; any motivated enough artist can potentially reach his audience without having to submit to the usual means of diffusion. And it isn´t without a little hint of proudness that I can say that no instrument more than cello is becoming the embodiment of the possibilities that open up when a classically trained musician invest him/herself, challenging the imposed limits and decides to “cross-over” and explore jazz.

Improvisation to me it represents a great resource to bring composer, performer and audience closer together and something definitely worth rediscovering.

Improvisation wasn´t born in New York nor in the cotton plantation of the south… its origins are lost in an ancient past were musical expression was regarded as the language of the immaterial world a way to amplify human emotions.

Mythical figures, poets, philosophers even statesmen… Before musical notation was even conceived, composers were improvisers using their craft to understand how the geometry of this ineffable world was capable to influence mankind as well as the stars in the sky.

keep that in mind next time you look closer to some of the masterworks of classical music era… you will see that many of them were, either inspired from, or just improvisations written down and later refined.

Improvisation is a method, a tool to tell a story that the improviser, unlike an actor, doesn’t recite by memory. Instead, he fixes in his mind the general plot to then start the narration; reacting to what he feels in the moment, to what his colleagues do… Even the audience can become part of the process.

to me that´s what links jazz and cello: there´s no better way to learn how to improvise that through jazz.

Film/Commercial

After a pretty serious accident, that forced me to take some time off from my cello, I had the chance of working for the “Audio Branding” team of Metadesing A.G. in Berlin.

What came out of that was four years of intensive “Non Academical” experience that deeply changed my perception of the role of “Creators” in the Media world.

After a little taste of that world, although I wouldn´t say it is my focus, I enjoy from time to time to work with Big Productions as well as more experimental projects.

Quartetto Casals

Commissioned by the Amsterdam Quartet Biennale, this incredible collaboration brought me to appreciate more the world of String Quartet.

The tour was unfortunately cut short due to the Pandemic.

Thanks to Cuarteto Casals for thinking of me, I really don´t know if I will ever be able to top this one.
